In our handy BBQ Grills guide, we will explain everything you need to know and help you step-by-step through the purchasing process to ensure you find what you are looking for.

A few things to consider

Every BBQ will grill slightly differently depending on its size, fuel type and features. When choosing a barbecue, there are a few things you need to consider first. These are:

·      How often you will use your BBQ

·      How many people you are cooking for

·      How much storage space you will have available

·      How you like your food cooked

We will explore these features in detail in this guide to help you find the right model for your cooking needs.

How often will you use your BBQ?

If you are looking to use your BBQ more regularly, then we recommend investing a little extra on a more durable model that will last you longer and offers a solid warranty. For occasional grills, you can opt for a more affordable, compact grill that can be easily stored away when not in use.

Where will you use your BBQ?

One of the most important factors to consider is the size of your outdoor space as this will help you to choose the right model.

Small spaces-

If you have a compact patio, balcony or courtyard, then a portable or folding barbecue is the right choice for you. Another great choice is an electric model as they produce minimal smoke and do not require gas or charcoal.

Medium to large gardens-

If you have more space available, you can opt for a larger gas, charcoal or hybrid BBQ. It is important to consider features such as side burners, storage shelves and warming racks as this can make the model slightly larger. Generally, most larger models are equipped with wheel so you can easily manoeuvre your barbecue in your garden space.

Make sure you check that your barbecue is placed on a flat, stable surface to avoid tipping. Remember to keep your barbecue away from fences, sheds and overhanging branches to reduce fire risks, and that the chosen area is well-ventilated. This is particularly important for charcoal barbecues and wood-fired grills as they produce more smoke when in use.

How many people will you be cooking for?

The size of your BBQ will depend on the number of people you will need to cook for. We have created a brief guide below to help you find the right sized model for your needs.

·      Up to four people- A small to medium grill, such as a compact charcoal model or a two to three-burner gas barbecue, will be a great choice.

·      Four to eight people- We recommend that you choose a model with a larger cooking area, such as a four-burner gas barbecue, or a more spacious charcoal or hybrid model.

·      More than eight people- Models such as a six-burner gas barbecue and a hybrid model with extra cooking zones will be the best option for you.

If you love hosting but don’t want to spend the whole evening at the grill, then we recommend that you consider a model with a warming rack to keep food hot.

Types of BBQs

One of the most important choices to make is which BBQ type you require for your cooking needs. Each model type offers a range of different features and styles so you can be sure that you will find the right grill. Let’s help you choose the best model type to elevate your cooking experience.

Gas barbecues-

If you are looking for a straightforward grilling experience, then a gas barbecue is the right choice for you. These models offer an easy start-up with an instant ignition so you can begin cooking quickly. Simply connect the barbecue to a gas canister (propane or butane are most suitable), press the ignition button and start grilling. Gas barbecues provide precise temperature control, and with most models featuring multiple burners, you can easily alternate your cooking temperatures so you can achieve more consistent cooking results. They are also low maintenance as they require minimal cleaning and needs no charcoal ash to be disposed of.

Charcoal barbecues-

If you are looking for a more traditional BBQ experience, then a charcoal model is the choice for you. Charcoal barbecues provide a classic, smoky flavour and high heat for exceptional searing. However, if you prefer a slower cooking experience, you can simply raise the grill further from the charcoal so you can grill to your standards. It is important to remember that these models will take more time to heat up as the embers need to be extremely hot before you can begin cooking.

Charcoal barbecues are a budget-friendly option and provide authentic, succulent results. Some models may also feature a handy cleaning system with a removable ash tray to enable easy cleaning.

Electric barbecues-

Electric BBQs are ideal for limited outdoor spaces and if there are any restrictions on open flames. These barbecues are compact, easy to use and provide the ultimate precision and control when cooking. Powered by electricity, these models are quick to heat up, smoke-free and require a simple set-up. Electric models tend to offer more control over the barbecue’s heat than a charcoal or gas model as they are equipped with intelligent features.

Hybrid barbecues-

A hybrid barbecue enables you to cook with either gas, charcoal or both together. You can enjoy the convenience of gas and prepare quick meals during the week, then switch to charcoal when you want more authentic BBQ flavours. And when you would like to use both, you can create different temperature zones by using one side for charcoal and the other for gas. These versatile models will enhance flavour options and provides you with a brilliant combination.

Wood pellet grills-

With a wood pellet grill, you can achieve an authentic wood-smoked flavour and cook food to perfection. Wood pellet grills provide consistent heat for even cooking and use natural fuel so you can select specific wood types to infuse distinctive flavours. These models are easy to use as you can simply add the wood pellets to the hopper, set your temperature and begin cooking.

Pizza ovens-

If you enjoy a traditional pizza and want to make your own at home, investing in the right pizza oven is key. These exceptional models can attain high temperatures for crispy crusts so you can create restaurant-quality pizzas in your own garden oasis. Some models are extremely versatile and can cook more than just pizzas, enabling you to bake bread, cook pies and heat meat.

Generally, most models are portable so you can place your pizza oven wherever you require in your outdoor space. There are many different fuel types to choose from with a pizza oven so you can find the right model for your needs. Whether you are looking for a traditional wood-fired oven or a more compact, electric model, there is something for every pizza lover.

Portable BBQs-

Portable barbecues are great for spontaneous getaways and cooking on the go. These models are easy to store away and offer exceptional convenience. Whether you are camping or hosting backyard summer parties, these compact models provide you with delicious cooking results.

Key features to consider

BBQs are equipped with a range of additional features to improve performance and make cooking easier for you. We have created a list of key features to consider to help you make the right purchase.

Grills-

There are a wide range of grill finishes to choose from.

·      Chrome plated- Provides an elegant finish and requires careful, thorough cleaning after each use.

·      Stainless steel- A more durable option, this finish is easy to clean and maintain.

·      Cast iron- Offers brilliant heat source. We recommend that you wipe the grill with cooking oil before and after use to prevent any rust from forming.

·      Porcelain-coated- Typically found on top-of-the-range models. Easy to clean and stops the coating from rusting. Some models offer a specialised “Flavouriser” bar that is designed to help create a smoky taste when hot juices and fats drop down from the grill.

Lids and hoods-

BBQ lids and hoods can be really helpful when cooking as they can keep food warm. When the lid is closed, the barbecue can detect the heat and smoke more evenly around the food to provide a more precise finish. Some hoods feature a thermometer to ensure that your meat is cooking at the right temperature.

Side burners-

Side burners are great for completing other cooking tasks such as heating and cooking sauces whilst you are grilling.

Griddles-

A griddle is a solid metal cooking surface that is perfect for foods that could slip through a traditional grill. Some models offer both a griddle and a standard grill for added versatility.

Warming rack-

Some models feature a warming rack so you can keep food warm whilst you are cooking other foods.

Adjustable grill-

An adjustable grill enables you to have more control over your cooking by transporting food to or from the heat.

Ash collection tray-

The handy ash collection tray will collect any ash and charcoal debris that builds during grilling. This will help you to save time on your cleaning.

Shelves-

Some models feature shelves to hold trays, dishes, condiments and beverages when cooking.

Wheels-

Generally, most models are equipped with wheels so you can easily manoeuvre the barbecue.

Loading door-

A loading door can be found on a charcoal model and enables you to reload your barbecue safely and easily.

Chimneys-

A handy feature to have, chimneys will disperse any excess smoke during cooking.

Fireboxes-

A firebox is an added chamber that is used for fuel such as wood to help infuse food with an extra smoky flavour.

Tools and accessories

There are several tools and accessories that you can use when cooking to elevate your grilling experience.

Cooking utensils-

·      Tongs

·      Grill baskets

·      Thermometer forks

Barbecue covers- You can protect your barbecue from any summer showers with a durable, water-resistant cover.

Fuel and accessories- You can keep your barbecue running smoothly by stocking up on plenty of charcoal, gas and firelighters. Remember to store any spare fuel away safely, particularly from any open flames.

Maintenance

It is important to take care of your appliance to protect your barbecue’s performance. BBQs are now designed with efficiency and longevity in mind, requiring only a few simply steps to keep them in their best condition.

We recommend that you clean your barbecue after every use to keep your grill in its best condition. Be sure to switch the barbecue off and wait until it has cooled down completely before you begin to clean. We advise that you use rubber gloves when cleaning to protect your hands as some cleaning solutions can be abrasive.

Cleaning your grill-

1.        Firstly, remove the grates and any other removable parts.

2.        You can use a wire brush to scrub away any built-up residue, rust and food particles. For tougher stains, we recommend using a specialised barbecue cleaner for safe cleaning and spotless results.

3.        With a damp cloth, wipe down the exterior of your barbecue.

4.        Finally, reassemble the grill and complete thorough drying before using your barbecue again.

Cleaning your utensils and accessories-

Keeping your cooking utensils and accessories clean is an essential part of barbecue maintenance. To remove any grease and grime from your utensils, we recommend that you use a specialised washing up liquid that is designed to cut through grease. Simply use a few drops and place your utensils into a bucket of hot water for approximately 30 minutes to an hour. Then, use a sponge or a soft-bristled brush to wipe them clean.

We recommend that you check your manufacturer’s guide and product details to ensure you understand what maintenance care your barbecue needs, and what you can do to help keep your grill running smoothly.
