Television Display Technology Explained

The panel type shapes your picture more than any other spec. Here's how the main options compare.

OLED TVs

OLED panels light each pixel individually, so blacks are truly black and contrast is exceptional. They're the enthusiast's choice for dark-room movie nights and fast-moving sport. Browse the OLED TV collection for models from LG, Sony and Panasonic.

QLED TVs

QLED uses a quantum-dot layer for bright, punchy colour that holds up well in sunlit rooms. It's a strong all-rounder for living rooms with plenty of natural light. Explore QLED televisions from Samsung, TCL and Hisense.

4K Ultra HD & Mini LED

4K Ultra HD is now the standard resolution, delivering four times the detail of Full HD. Mini LED adds thousands of tiny backlight zones for deeper contrast and higher brightness, narrowing the gap with OLED. See the 4K TVs range and Mini LED TVs.

OLED vs QLED: OLED offers perfect blacks and superior contrast, ideal for dark rooms and cinematic viewing. QLED is brighter and more colour-rich, better suited to bright rooms. Choose OLED for picture quality, QLED for brightness and value.

Shop Televisions by Screen Size

Screen size should suit your room and viewing distance. As a rough guide, sit about 1.5–2.5 times the screen's diagonal away for 4K content.

FAQ's

Atlantic Electrics stocks televisions from all major manufacturers, including Samsung, LG, Sony, and Panasonic. As a family-run electronics specialist trading since 1972 with direct manufacturer accounts, we offer 4K Ultra HD, OLED, QLED, and Smart TVs across a wide range of screen sizes. OLED and QLED differ in how they produce light. OLED panels light each pixel individually, delivering perfect blacks, infinite contrast, and wider viewing angles—ideal for film and dark-room viewing. QLED uses a quantum-dot layer for brighter, more vivid colours, performing better in well-lit rooms. Both feature 4K resolution and HDR. Atlantic Electrics stocks both technologies from Samsung, LG, and Sony.
Choose your TV size based on viewing distance: for 4K sets, sit roughly 1.5 times the screen's diagonal away. A 55-inch TV suits most living rooms at 2–2.5 metres, while 65 to 75 inches works for larger spaces or a cinematic feel. Atlantic Electrics groups televisions by size (43"–54", 55"–64", 65"–74") to make choosing easier.
Yes, Smart TVs are worth buying for most households. They include built-in apps like Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, and YouTube, removing the need for separate streaming devices. Many also offer voice control via Alexa or Google Assistant and connect to smart home systems. Nearly all modern televisions at Atlantic Electrics are Smart TVs with seamless streaming and HDR support.
Yes, Atlantic Electrics offers fast delivery on televisions throughout the UK. Orders are typically dispatched promptly, with flexible delivery options depending on product size and your location. Larger screens are handled with appropriate care, and our team can advise on timescales at checkout. You can also collect from our North West London store if you prefer.
Televisions from Atlantic Electrics come with a manufacturer's warranty, typically 12 months as standard, covering parts and workmanship against faults. As an accredited retailer with a dedicated in-house service department, we also provide reliable after-sales support. Warranty length varies by brand and model, so check the individual product listing or ask our team for specifics before purchasing.
Modern televisions are considerably more energy efficient than older models, though consumption varies by size and panel type. Every TV sold in the UK carries an energy label rated A to G under the current scheme, showing power use in kWh per 1,000 hours. LED and QLED sets generally use less power than large OLEDs. Check each product's energy rating on its Atlantic Electrics listing.
Yes, most televisions can be wall-mounted using a VESA-compatible bracket matching the TV's mounting hole pattern and weight. Atlantic Electrics stocks flat, tilting, and full-motion wall brackets to suit screens from small LEDs to 65-inch-plus displays. Check your TV's VESA size and weight before choosing a mount, or ask our team to recommend the correct bracket.
A soundbar isn't essential, but it noticeably improves sound over a TV's built-in speakers, which are often thin due to slim designs. Many premium televisions include Dolby Atmos processing, yet a soundbar delivers fuller bass and clearer dialogue. If you enjoy films, gaming, or music, it's a worthwhile addition. Atlantic Electrics stocks matching audio to complement your new television.
Atlantic Electrics accepts returns in line with UK consumer law, giving you the right to return most online purchases within 14 days of delivery if unused and in original condition. Faulty televisions are covered separately under warranty. If an item arrives damaged, our delivery team can arrange collection and a prompt refund. Contact us to start any return.
