What Is a Heat Pump Tumble Dryer?
A heat pump tumble dryer dries clothes by circulating the same warm air repeatedly through a sealed system. The heat pump extracts moisture from the air, condenses it into a removable water tank, then reheats the now-dry air and sends it back through the drum.
Nothing is vented outside. Nothing is wasted. That closed loop is exactly why running costs fall so sharply compared with a traditional vented dryer, which heats fresh air once and throws it out of the window.
The trade-off is time. A full cotton cycle usually takes between two and three hours rather than 90 minutes. Most people find the electricity savings comfortably outweigh the wait, particularly if you run cycles overnight on an off-peak tariff.
How the Refrigerant Cycle Works?
The refrigerant inside the sealed circuit - usually R290 or R134a - evaporates as it absorbs heat, then condenses to release it. An evaporator cools the humid drum air so water droplets form and drain away. A compressor and condenser then warm the dried air before it re-enters the drum.

Running Costs Explained
A 9kg A+++ heat pump dryer typically consumes around 1.5–2.0 kWh per full cotton cycle. At roughly 25p per kWh, that works out at about 40–50p a load.
The same load in an older C-rated vented machine can draw 4.5 kWh, or well over £1. Across 150 loads a year, the difference is roughly £80–£100 annually - which usually pays back the higher purchase price within three to four years.
Two things make the biggest practical difference to your bill:

Sensor drying. Moisture sensors stop the cycle the moment clothes reach the selected dryness level. This saves energy and prevents over-drying, which is the main cause of shrinkage and fabric wear.
Self-cleaning condenser. Found on many Bosch and Miele models, this automatically flushes the heat exchanger so you only need to empty the lint filter. Machines without it need the exchanger rinsing manually every month or two.

Installation and Placement
Heat pump dryers need no vent hose, so they can go almost anywhere with a standard 13A socket - a kitchen, utility room, understairs cupboard or hallway alcove.
Three practical points:
- Airflow. Leave a few centimetres of clearance around the machine. The heat pump draws air in and expels slightly warmer air, so a fully sealed cupboard will reduce performance.
- Temperature. Performance drops in unheated garages below about 5°C. If your only space is a cold outbuilding, check the manufacturer's minimum operating temperature first.
- Water drainage. Most models collect condensate in a pull-out tank you empty each cycle. Many can instead be plumbed into a waste pipe with a drain kit - worth doing if the dryer sits near your sink.
Maintenance: Keeping Efficiency High
Heat pump dryers lose efficiency faster than other types when neglected, because a blocked heat exchanger directly restricts the refrigerant cycle.
- Empty the lint filter after every cycle
- Empty the water tank after every cycle, or plumb it in
- Rinse the fine secondary filter every 4–5 cycles
- Clean the heat exchanger monthly if the model is not self-cleaning
- Wipe the drum seal and door glass occasionally to prevent fluff build-up
A well-maintained machine will hold its rated efficiency for years. A neglected one can take 30% longer per cycle within eighteen months.
